1985 proof Half-Sovereign

I am selling a small part of my "personal collection" (I have a much larger, more serious "investment collection") for a bit of spending money. As the title suggests, it is a proof half-sovereign without the CoA or box. It was originally purchased from APMEX, and verified by a local dealer.

THe local dealer offered me $90 when gold was $930 for it, and I rejected that number. I turned to ebay.

The scan is crude and didn't capture the luster of the coin. The glass surface of my scanner is 6 years old and not in the best condition, either. I also will do international shipping.

Gold, no COA and a rating of 2? You sir, are a serious optimist. I wish you well.

I figured so. In retrospect, I should have started with a silver eagle or something.

I've only bought 2 things in my life from ebay. (a Cross fountain pen and an 18 karat gold nib/writing tip for the pen)

Well Baldwin is a GIM veteran and has quite a few posts here. I suspect thats why he/she put this information on GIM for us to take advantage. I suspect they made the right move putting the link here on GIM.

Good luck Baldwin.

PS: I hope you at least get the 90 your dealer offered.

That's why i was surprised at putting it on ebay. He'd probably get a better end result offering it here, and save himself all the e-bay fees.

Funny enough, I went with a Waterman. Nothing beats the expression on people's faces when you pull that out to sign something.

Go back to your dealer.

If my dealer even offered spot for it, I'd accept. He was giving me below spot with the excuse that it was 22k. Never mind that sovereigns/half-sov's are a world bullion coin with a nearly 200 year old history.

I was thinking of offering it here, but I haven't posted here with regularity in nearly a year.

I know that look. Next to a bic pen or some other thing ball point sold in a box of 100 for $4, a good Cross/Parker/Waterman etc is a work of art.

Might have a bid myself. Am a fan of the Sovereigns. They avoid Capital Gains tax in UK :D

I do shipping back and forth to the UK as a citizen/resident of the US and a student at St Andrews uni. It would be the most familiar foreign country for me to ship to.

If you purchased it from Apmex and are having trouble selling it, give apmex a call and see if they'll buy it back from you.

Maybe we got us a bit of competition then. I'm in the mood to put some fractional gold on the stack.

I'm not too serious about it. Fasttcar's doing a good job keeping my fiat reserves low.

The coin has bid up to $86 quite nicely, with a few days left to go. I might put up a few other items as well, since this seems to be going so nicely.

Jolly GOOD.

Just wait until you get the paypal chargeback though, lol!

(just kidding. I hear all the horror stories, but I have never had it happen to me, knock on wood.)

Would the people here care to place their roof bids? Spot at the moment is a hair under $110. I see no sense in bidding against you guys and pushing up the price excessively. Let the one here willing to go highest take the fight to whatever ebay bidders want to contest him.

I'd rather sell it for $100 and pay $7 in fees rather than sell it to my dealer for $17 (15.8%) below spot. He was offering me 90 when spot was $107.50

Re: 1985 proof Half-Sovereign

All right now, I'M the highest bidder. Just recently picked up a couple of Sovereigns and a 1/2 sovereign wouldn't be a bad addition to my gold collection. I got the Sovereigns because it reminds me of "The Christmas Carol", "I say Dick, it's a gold Sovereign". :36_1_34: Old Fezzywig did Dick and Ebeneezer good.

Now into over-spot territory. Congrats, Baldwin.

It's also over what I'm ready to pay for it. All yours, Cruz.

I was happy to see an American bid on it. The bid before you is by a guy from Singapore. Singapore's import laws make a coin like a sovereign fuzzy territory. Bullion more than $35 US is prohibited, though coins for ornamentation, jewelry etc are not.

You can configure your auctions to be unavailable to certain countries. You can also state it in the text (which you did but without explicit exemption).
Next time use GIM Buy&Sell and save yourself all the fees.

So, I was outbid. You should, depending on what you paid, get your money back on this coin. Hopefully it ain't the guy from Singapore that outbid me.

Baldwin 08-03-2009 11:29 PM

Re: 1985 proof Half-Sovereign

Well, the item sold and was shipped earlier today to Singapore. The winning bid was 125.50 + $13 for international shipping.

The paypal hold on funds is annoying, but the winner has a history of buying gold coins from Americans successfully, so this should go without a problem.
